Axel is a hero in this rescue. We believe you will agree after hearing his story. We'll let Axel tell you in his own words. There are pictures available to ADULTS ONLY if you choose to view them. "Hello my name is Axel. Awhile back I was hanging out at home and my supposed owners got angry with one another. I saw something terrible was about to happen, and like any good German Shepherd Dog moved in to protect the lady being attacked. I was stabbed badly by the man and immediately blacked out due to loss of blood. I think I remember a police man

transporting me to a hospital. The nice officer kept talking to me and telling me to hang on while he was driving fast to an Emergency Hospital where I was given pain medication and IV fluids because the doctor there said I was in something called shock. It took a little time, but I feel better now. I heard her say my wound was five inches long. I don't remember much about that night anymore. I hear people saying I'm better now. I again enjoy playing ball, although it sometimes hurts my hips to run. No one has explained to me why I am in a new home. I thought I did my job really well. So, my Foster Mom told me what happened. Instead of going to my old home from the hospital, I was shocked to learn that I lost my home for protecting my female, she turned me in to be put to sleep and got that other male, the one that was going to stab her out of jail. My Foster Mom says I am better where I am. She's trying to get my hips fixed, make sure I get enough food and water daily so my coat won't feel like dry straw anymore and no one yells at me or hits me. Instead I get cuddled and kissed. Makes a guy feel embarrassed, but secretly I like it."
UPDATE: June 22nd, Friday - Axel is back in the hospital due to complications with his shoulder. He will undergo corrective surgery on Monday, June 25th. At that time he will also be neutered and a diagnosis of hips given. Please offer your prayers and support for this hero. We will keep you informed.
June 26th, Tuesday - Axel made it through surgery to repair his shoulder and is resting comfortably. We will post pictures in a couple of days when he feels well enough to photograph. The hip radiographs reveal that his hips are in better condition than originally thought. It could be many years before he experiences any challenges. We've put him on supplements and formulated his nutrition to extend the use of his current hips. Things are looking up for this boy and we are elated.
July 27, 2007, Saturday - Axel went to his forever adoptive home today. We leave his story on our website because it is horrendous and sad anyone would so injure an animal. We'll update you from time to time with new pictures and anecdotes about his wonderful new life in the St. Petersburg, FL area.
August 4, 2007, Saturday - Axel's new Dad says he fits perfectly into his new family and Axel is enjoying meeting new people, the dog park and getting loads and loads of love and affection from his Dad.
Nov. 9, 2007, Friday - Axel's Dad report Axel repeat heart worm test came back negative.
Dec. 1, 2007, Saturday - Axel's Dad reports Axel has a new sister. A beautiful 8-year-old WGSD Sierra rescued from a shelter close to their home.
In the beginning there was
26 Lost Souls Howling for help.
Orange County officials responded.
And so, the dogs of the 26-Pack went to the facilities at Orange County Animal Control. Their first few days were spent being treated for tick and flea infestation. Weeks following their rescue these dogs still have ticks crawling out of their ears. Many were emaciated, missing hair all over their bodies and all were fearful of both men and women. The dedicated men and woman from Orange County spent untold hours of their free time visiting with and socializing the dogs until it was safe for them to leave the facility and continue the road back in foster homes. The members of this rescue were honored to be contacted and allowed to help in the rehabilitation of the dogs. And so, to homes some of the dogs traveled. Below are pictures after months in foster care.

Top Ten Reasons To Adopt A Black Dog
10. We cannot clash with your furniture or clothing, and we know some of you actually worry about that.
9. We cannot clash with any collar you might choose either! Ditto for bandanas. Accessorize us!!!!
8. Ease of vaccuuming! You can quickly spot the areas of most urgent need.
7. Excellent night walk protection, the "bad guy" won't see us til it's too late!
6. We hide dirt well (doesn't mean we don't need that bath after a messy play, but your guests won't be able to see it so quickly).
5. We make an excellent "backdrop" for a second, more colorful dog if you choose to have more than one.
4. Availability! We are available now at every shelter you can imagine, in every age bracket, no long waiting lists, no long search!
3. Status symbol potential. Black pearls are the most costly you know....
2. No annoying queries "what kind of dog is that" people are content with "big black dog" and don't ask!
1. We need you!
This message brought to you by the thousands of big black dogs who will die today because no one realizes our wonderful potential
Did You Know: We are guessing that the general public is not aware of how doomed black dogs are when they are brought to a pound because black dogs, are euthanized at a horrifying rate at many pounds & shelters because people pass them up for lighter colored dogs. If you are thinking about adopting a dog please don't overlook black dogs because they are just as loving & wonderful as lighter colored dogs!

Shadow the day after she
came to our rescue.
Shadow one week after starting medical
treatment for her Demodeptic Mange.

1/18/09 -- Shadow is not yet 2-years-old and has spent much of her puppyhood suffering because a man did not care enough to provide the simple medications that would stop her suffering. The outrage we feel about this is indescribable. There is no excuse for anyone to allow a dog to suffer like this.
It will take Shadow about 11 weeks to overcome her physical challenges. The great news is this condition is also called puppy mange and will not return once we knock it out completely, which we will do before allowing Shadow to be adopted. The vet had trouble finding a place on her body to draw blood. Dr. McBride instructed us not to give Shadow medicated baths as they would cause her too much pain. Movement caused her to scream out in pain. Blessedly those days are gone. We still are giving her body more time to heal itself before we start the medicated baths, just to make sure they do not cause any pain.
This girl is so sweet and loving we find it hard to believe anyone could treat her so callously. We at the rescue feel blessed to have her with us and have pledged to her a much brighter feature.
We refuse to put a collar around her neck as it will cause her pain. Blessedly, Shadow does not need one. She stays right with us. Shadow is grateful for everything we do for her. Okay, she hates taking the daily doses of Ivermectin and fusses when we force her to take her meds. Yes, her foster Mom apologizes to her daily for the awful tasting medicine. LOL
Stay tuned for Shadow updates.
Shadow is now healthy, happy and living with two wonderful parents in north Florida. She is fully recovered.

Thank you to all that helped Trix-Trix Fight For Her Life
We pulled this three-year-old female from animal control on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. She is very ill and extremely high Heartworm positive. The Heartworm disease is so advanced we have no choice but to put her through the Immiticide treatment to try and save her life. Plus there is a major infection on her right paw and she is emaciated. She is a really sweet dog and we are hoping the public will reach out and help us with her vet bills that will be extensive in our fight to save her life.
Unfortunately, Trix-Trix lost the battle regardless what we and the vet did. Trix-Trix is a prime example of animal abuse. I wish I could say her story is an isolated case. Sadly, it is not. Rescues across the country fight this problem daily. Trix-Trix deserved better. The best we can say is she was loved, comforted, and treated with dignity in her final days. We will move her to our abuse page soon as clearly this dog was severely abused.
